Half Bath DIY: Modern Monochrome Vibes

We are making a good amount of progress in making our home feel more like our own, room by room, project by project. And we love getting to share the updates with you as we go! So ready for another one?

Next up on our list for a refresh was our half bathroom. I knew I wanted to add a muted color to the walls, and I’ve been soo obsessed lately with the monochrome trend of rooms painted with trim and ceilings the same color as the walls. So that was the plan.

The first step for us was finding the right color. The more I have to pick paint colors for projects, the more I’m learning that it is the hardest part of each project. There are so many factors and variables that can affect and change the color. 

My initial picks were Sherwin Williams Sage Green Light and Pewter Green. I was so sad when I got home and put both samples up on the wall and realized they looked NOTHING like the chips I was looking at in the store. 

However, I hadn’t taken into consideration the fact that in our half bathroom there is no window, and therefore, no natural light source. There’s only the vanity light which casts warm hues in the room and makes the colors look so warm, washed out, and blah. 

So to compensate, on my next round of samples I knew I needed to grab slightly more cool tones, and a little bit more vibrant colors than my original samples. I can’t tell you how much time I spent in Sherwin Williams and how many colors I considered. 

I hopped on Pinterest searching for muted cool green colors and that’s where I found Rosemary. The second I saw it I had a good feeling about it. I also got samples of Rookwood Dark Green and oak wood just to be sure. 

I put up the samples when I got home and loved the tone of Rosemary. It was maybe a smidge darker than I was hoping for, but I decided to pull the trigger. 

After we painted the ceilings and walls I had a mild panic attack like “WHAT DID I DO?!” “Did I make a huge mistake?” Jordan kindly reminded me I do this mid way through almost every single project and that I usually come out loving it. Which of course, he was right. 

We finished up painting, went to bed, and in the morning we hung the mirror, light, and added little knick knacks and decorations. And let me tell you, wow, we are OBSESSED! It is such a vibe and I kind of just want to hangout in there. Weird? Maybe. But I just can’t get enough of it! 

The power of good paint color is amazing and so simple! But before you do any painting of your own, learn from our mistakes and always consider light sources when picking a color.
